Police have charged 40-year-old Adelio Bispo de Oliveira in connection with the attack. The culprit is a socialist whose Facebook page featured anti-Bolsonaro posts, according to police. Bispo de Oliveira claims he was on ‘a mission from God’.
Although it was originally thought that Bolsonaro had escaped serious injury, his son later said that Bolsonaro arrived at hospital “almost dead” and lost a lot of blood.
The hospital said Mr Bolsonaro suffered a perforated intestine, describing his condition as “stable.” He will spend a week in hospital and take at least a month to recover.
News outlets like CNN reacted to the stabbing by smearing Bolsonaro’s character, accusing him of “making racist, sexist and homophobic remarks” and all but saying he deserved it.
Bolsonaro is a populist who has vowed to fix the country’s crumbling economy and address Brazil’s rampant corruption.
