While speaking at AIPAC, Democrat Presidential Candidate Mike Bloomberg bragged about supporting the building of a mosque near the site of 9/11.

The Washington Examiner had a nice writeup on what the project was:

Mr. Bloomberg was referring to a plan, floated in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by Al Qaeda jihadists that killed more than 3,000 people and left a smoking crater in downtown Manhattan, to build a mosque and a $100 million Muslim community center near where the legendary skyscrapers once stood.

Supporters said the 13-story Muslim center would be a way of bridging divisions and healing.

Now, everything I have said showcases that legally this Mosque seems to be fine. There was no legal case against the Mosque. However, the real debate came regarding where the Mosque was placed.

The Mosque was two blocks from the World Trade Center. It was so close that the building was damaged in the attacks. This is an important caveat. This building was a victim of the attacks perpetrated by only Muslims.

Another important aspect was the fact that it was going to be funded by foreign Mulsm Nations:

And Rauf is rather vague about where the estimated $100 million is coming from to build this 13-story tower. The imam said the money would be raised here. But he told a London newspaper that Muslim nations would also fund this project.

Malcolm Hoenlein, leader of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, is highly skeptical. He pointed out: “Imam Rauf refuses to condemn Hamas. And why is it being built here? Is it to celebrate a victory against the United States, as some militant Muslims may see it?”

Rauf also somewhat blamed the US for what happened on 9/11:

Rauf, Sept. 30, 2001: I wouldn’t say that the United States deserved what happened, but the United States policies were an accessory to the crime that happened.

Correspondent Ed Bradley: OK. You say that we’re an accessory?

Rauf: Yes.

Bradley: How?

Rauf: Because we have been an accessory to a lot of — of innocent lives dying in the world. In fact, it — in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden is made in the USA.
