Trump Announces Historic Peace Deal Between Israel, UAE

President Trump announced that he signed a historic peace deal between Israel and the UAE.

The Washington Examiner:

Israel and the United Arab Emirates agreed to establish diplomatic relations in a “historic diplomatic breakthrough” negotiated alongside the United States.

“This is a remarkable achievement for two of the world’s most forward-leaning, technologically advanced states, and reflects their shared regional vision of an economically integrated region,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday. “It also illustrates their commitment to confronting common threats, as small — but strong — nations.”

The deal, a culmination of years of warming ties between Israel and Arab countries wary of threats posed by Iran, brings one of the leading Gulf Arab nations into open recognition of the Jewish state. Most Arab nations have refused to recognize Israel, citing their support for Palestinian territorial claims, but the agreement unveiled Thursday exchanges the new ties for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s promise to “suspend” a plan to annex territory that many observers regard as necessary for a prospective Palestinian state.

“This historic diplomatic breakthrough will advance peace in the Middle East region and is a testament to the bold diplomacy and vision of the three leaders and the courage of the United Arab Emirates and Israel to chart a new path that will unlock the great potential in the region,” the White House said in a statement tweeted by President Trump. “Delegations from Israel and the United Arab Emirates will meet in the coming weeks to sign bilateral agreements regarding investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications, technology, energy, healthcare, culture, the environment, the establishment of reciprocal embassies, and other areas of mutual benefit.”

The agreement was signed by Trump, Netanyahu, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed of Abu Dhabi. Emirati officials offered the agreement as a boon for the Palestinians. “It immediately stops annexation and the potential of violent escalation,” UAE Ambassador Yousef al Otaiba said Thursday. “It maintains the viability of a two-state solution as endorsed by the Arab League and international community. … The UAE will continue to remain a strong supporter of the Palestinian people — for their dignity, their rights, and their own sovereign state. They must benefit too in normalization.”

More winning from President Trump…
