Media Mogul John Malone is the leading shareholder in Discovery and reportedly was the main architect in the merger of Discovery and CNN.
Malone isn’t some run-of-the-mill media baron either. He’s a member of the board of Discovery Inc., in addition to being the longtime chairman of Liberty Media, and a long-time cable news pioneer.
As the leading shareholder in Discovery and reportedly a chief architect in the merger of Discovery and CNN, his comments about the role that a news network would play in a future streaming world merit significant attention.
Malone blasted CNN during an interview saying that he “would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with.”
He then added that he wants to see CNN “actually have journalists.”
There’s a place for CNN in the proposed $43 billion combination of WarnerMedia and Discovery, billionaire media mogul John Malone told CNBC in a recorded interview that aired Thursday.
“I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing,†said the cable TV pioneer and longtime chairman of Liberty Media, which is a major shareholder in Discovery. “I do believe good journalism could have a role in this future portfolio that Discovery-TimeWarner’s going to represent.â€
He also praised Fox News.
“Fox News, in my opinion, has followed an interesting trajectory of trying to have ‘news’ news, I mean some actual journalism, embedded in a program schedule of all opinions,” he said.
CNN has developed a reputation as a left-wing opinion network that bills itself as a straight-news operation and has struggled for relevancy as a result. It recently finished October with its smallest monthly audience among both weekday total day viewers and the key primetime demographic of adults age 25-54 since 2014, as every weekday program on CNN finished with a yearly low in both categories.
