It is important to understand what non-violent means. It seems that Pelosi is using the term non-violent as a way to make more palatable than just releasing criminals(although we have seen them pushing this as well.
Here are three types of crimes that fall under “non-violent” felonies”:
In terms of non-violent felonies, many are considered to be “victimless†crimes. Current legislation criminalizes specific “victimless†offenses more so for moral and societal purposes. Common broad categories of non-violent felonies include:
- White-collar crimes, such as fraud, tax crimes, bribery, counterfeiting, etc.;
- Property crimes such as theft, embezzlement, receipt of stolen goods, arson, etc.; or
- Drug and alcohol crimes, such as public intoxication, illegal drug manufacturing or distribution, etc.
So, drug dealers and thieves will be released thanks to this bill. Don’t let the term “non-violent” make it seem like these people did nothing wrong. They were in jail for a reason.
Breitbart pointed out some of the other actions that have been taken to release criminals from jail:Â
Already, thousands of inmates are being released from county and local prisons across the U.S. — including nearly 200 illegal aliens convicted of violent crimes, convicted sex offenders, suspects accused of murder, and repeat violent offenders. In New York City, alone, nearly 1,700 inmates have been freed from prison in the last two months, along with 830 inmates in Massachusetts, more than 4,500 inmates in Illinois, and more than 5,500 inmates in California.
We should not be releasing criminals. I am entirely for making sure that inmates in prison are safe. I am entirely for ensuring that inmates are kept safe. However, we have to do that while keeping them away from society. We have to do that while keeping the law-abiding Americans safe.
