John McCain showed his true colors today in his verbal attack of Rand Paul. This is because of Rand Pauls opposing of the addition of Montenegro to NATO.
McCain had this to say:
“If there is objection you are achieving the objectives of Vladimir Putin, you are achieving the objectives of trying to dismember this small country, which has already been the subject of a small coup,†McCain said.
The Republican senator added, “If they object, they are now carrying out the desires and ambitions of Vladimir Putin, and I do not say that lightly.â€
Now, this is just another attempt from a system politician to blindly throw the Russian narrative around to delegitimize someone who opposes them. McCain attempts to paint a picture that this really is a no-brainer when in reality that is false.
Numerous sources who have touched on this topic agree that adding Montenegro to Nato is the wrong move.
This is a part of an article written for theamericanconserative on the topic:
“There is no compelling reason to bring Montenegro into the alliance. The reasons not to bring them in are many. The alliance gains nothing from adding a new member. Most of the people in the country are opposed or indifferent to joining. Montenegro’s government doesn’t meet alliance political standards for new members. Another round of expansion just makes an already unwieldy organization even more so. Adding Montenegro doesn’t expose the alliance to the risk of a major war, but that is because the country isn’t threatened by any of its neighbors and doesn’t need the protection that the alliance affords. Neither the U.S. nor the alliance is made more secure by adding a new member, and enhancing our security is the only reason why we should take on another ally.
The main reason that advocates for continued expansion want Montenegro in the alliance is that it keeps the idea of expanding NATO alive, and the other reason is that it irks Moscow. Neither of these is a good reason to extend yet another security guarantee to a country that won’t pull its own weight and will contribute virtually nothing to the alliance. It would have been better if the offer of membership had never been made, but there is still time to withdraw it.”
If America has learned anything over its past two presidencies it is stop getting involved in other peoples business. The idea of NATO has become a joke considering America basically carries the entire alliance on its back. America needs to worry about securing its own borders and defeating ISIS before worrying about adding another country to NATO especially when they don’t want to be there.
