Sen. Jeff Flake (R., Ariz.) was interviewed just after a gunman opened fire on Republican members of Congress practicing for a charity baseball game in Alexandria, Va.

Flake was caught in the middle of the shooting, along with other staffers and a 10-year-old boy.

Among the wounded was House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R., La.). Flake described Scalise’s movement after he was shot.

“He dragged himself about 15 yards off of there near second base on the field, and [he was] laying motionless out there,” Flake said. “Couldn’t get to him until the shooting stopped.”

“Steve was playing second base, fielding balls at the time,” he added.

Scalise is in stable condition, according to reports. Alexandria police said five people were taken from the scene for medical care following the shooting. No fatalities were reported.

Others came into contact with Flake who were shot besides Scalise.

“[Rep.] Joe Barton’s boy, a 10-year-old boy, was here, and we got him in the dugout and put him under the bench,” Flake said. “After a time, another staffer ran in with a leg wound. He was shot in the leg, I think it was … one of [Rep.] Roger Williams’ staffers. He had been shot in the field and continued to run limp into the dugout, and we got a belt and put it around the wound and tried to keep it.”

Flake caught a glimpse of the shooter as well.

“He had a blue shirt. He was firing into the dugout,” Flake said.
