A meeting with Kim Jong-un is Trump’s only chance for a diplomatic victory in the Korean Penisula

In an interview with Bloomberg Donald Trump said he is open to the idea of meeting with North Korean despot Kim Jong-un

“If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him, I would absolutely, I would be honored to do it,” Trump said Monday in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg News. “If it’s under the, again, under the right circumstances. But I would do that.”

This seemed to come as a surprise to many but we have known this was on the table for quite some time. Back in February The Washington Post reported that North Korean officials were open to meeting with American officials.(We covered it here)

Now the Trump administration has acknowledged that this meeting is still a long way off. No meeting with Kim can come until he shows a willingness to work with the United States and disarm their nuclear arsenal.

As of right now, North Korea is facing harsh sanctions from nations across the globe. Not even seeing his people starving in the streets deters him from stopping his attempts at acquiring more nuclear power.

A meeting with Kim Jong-un would be the only way for Trump to acquire a diplomatic victory in the Korean Penisula. Sanctions have done nothing but make Kim more interested in acquiring more nuclear power. This meeting is still highly unlikely but if it takes place would be a massive win for President Trump.
